"When I got my knighthood, many people asked me about my unfulfilled wishes. I told them that I wanted to work with Amrish Puri in a film."
Those were the days, my friends! Meeting old friends and catching up with them about the good old times is always fun. And when The Leeds Metropolitan University organised its first alumni meet in India, a lot of students turned up. Some even travelled from different cities to be a part of the evening. However, this party wasn't only about meeting old friends, it was also time to network and hear people like Anil Sachdev and Mark Tully, who were the special guests and shared their experiences with the students.
A DREAM: As we got talking to Tully, he told us about a secret dream of his. He said, "When I got my knighthood, many people asked me about my unfulfilled wishes. I told them that I wanted to work with Amrish Puri in a film. When Amrish got to know about this, he called me up and said, 'Ho jayega'. Unfortunately, he passed away and my dream could not be fulfilled." A DESIRE TO LEARN:
Elspeth Jones, international dean of the university, welcomed the students, both old and new, and spoke about the changes in the university. What added a personal touch to the formal evening was the introduction of the students, when Elspeth went around and handed gifts to each one of them. This was followed by some serious advice from Sachdev and a speech by Tully. He said, "I feel strange standing and talking in front of so many businessmen as I am not a businessman myself." He told everyone never to stop learning from India.
REUNITING: Gurpreet Singh, an alumnus, loved catching up with old buddies. He said, "I am meeting some of my friends after a long t i m e. It's great to meet them. These events should be organised each year." Amen to that. MARK'S LOVE Mark Tully is passionate about Bollywood films and is impressed with the way Indian films are gaining popularity in Britain. He told us, "I loved both the Munnabhai movies and Iqbal too. My all-time favourite actors are Amrish Puri, Sunil Dutt and Amjad Khan."
